I live in Tokyo now, but I grew up in Okayama, the part of Japan where Bizen ware is made.

Bizen pots have no glaze and no painting. The colour comes from the clay and the fire, so no two come out quite the same. Before I use a Bizen piece, I soak it, usually in the water left from rinsing rice.

Why I do this

Many of the pots I like most are made by one potter, or a small family kiln, and sold close to where they're made. Not many of them travel far. When they do, the potter's name and story often get left behind.

Earth & Fire Japan is my way of sending both. You tell me what you're after. I ask the potter, check the piece when it reaches me, and send it on with a few words about who made it and where. I'm still learning, and I write only about what I've checked.
